Daniel Day-Lewis and OPEN DOOR
The special relationship that developed between Daniel Day-Lewis and the children of Open Door began in 1989, when, at the invitation of his friend, director George Economou, Daniel came to Athens for the first time to attend the premiere of the film "My Left Foot." To play the role of a man with a severe physical disability, he spent three months at a school for children with disabilities in Ireland, where a young boy told him: "You're not doing badly, Dan, but you still aren't doing very well." After this close interaction with children with disabilities, Daniel insisted that all proceeds from the screening of his film in Athens be donated to the Cerebral Palsy Greece.
The day after the premiere, Daniel visited the children at Open Door, and they gave him a lucky charm, which he kept in his pocket a week later during the Oscars. The next morning, he called us: "Tell the children we won!" Since then, Daniel Day-Lewis has not missed a single premiere of his films in Athens and is always by the side of the children of Open Door.
