The Athens International Film Festival at the Oscars!

And the Oscar goes to... the Athens International Film Festival! Nine films screened at the recent Athens International Film Festival are nominated for 27 Oscars at the 96th Academy Awards.

The Athens International Film Festival constantly and consistently seek to introduce to its loyal audience the best, most anticipated films of the year and the recent announcement of the Oscar nominations confirms this goal.

In this year's nominations, the Athens International Film Festival is solemnly present with films that are worthy Oscar contenders among the top films of the year and which our viewers had the opportunity to watch in a nationwide first screening at the 29th Athens International Film Festival and the 13th Athens Open Air Film Festival.

The Scorsese's epic "Killers of the Flower Moon" which brings back from oblivion a shocking genocide, the Palme d'Or-winner "Anatomy of a Fall" by Justine Triet with a wonderful performance by Sandra Huller, Jonathan Glazer's courageous unconventional treatise on the Holocaust "The Zone of Interest", the tender Opening Film ("Past Lives" by Celine Song) and the spectacular Closing Film ("The Boy and the Heron" by Hayao Miyazaki), Todd Haynes' delightful "May December", the unexpected surprise of the year "The Teacher's Lounge" by Ilker Çatak and the excellent documentaries "The Eternal Memory" and "20 Days in Mariupol" that deal with past and present issues of historical record, gathered 27 Oscar nominations in the Academy's top categories, just a few months after their screening at the Athens International Film Festival.

This year's nine Oscar contestants of the Athens International Film Festival equal last year's number, as in 2023 nine films of the 28th festival received an Oscar nomination. In particular: Martin McDonagh's bitter satire "The Banshees of Inisherin", Ruben Östlund's Palme d'Or-winner "The Triangle of Sadness", Charlotte Wells' moving "Aftersun", Jerzy Skolimowski's "EO", Lukas Dhont's "Close" and Colm Bairéad's "The Quiet Girl", were nominated in the International Feature Film category, as well as the documentaries "All That Breathes", "All the Beauty and the Bloodshed" and "Fire of Love".
