There is something fateful in the forces behind the encounter of Wim Wenders with a top visual artist of the last 50 years, Anselm Kiefer. Both are German, both were born in the same year; both are refreshing figures of German Art. Wenders paints a monumental portrait of Kiefer. Reflective, philosophical, ‘German’, heavy yet not inaccessible. A portrait of the art that speaks about him instead of the clichéd parade of talking heads. The huge works shine, shot in Wenders' 6K, the huge spaces accommodating them serve ideally as the film’s studio. And then all threads come together, the poetic mind of the artist shines, the awe of the signified prevails. And, yes, Wim Wenders is setting in befitting magnificence. I.D.

WIM WENDERS
German filmmaker born in 1945. A central figure of New German Cinema. He started studying Medicine and Philosophy but dropped them to become a painter. He insisted on becoming an etcher but cinema won him over. He studied Film in Munich and worked as a film critic. Receiver of Palme D’ Or and Golden Lion at Cannes and Venice respectively, among several other honors. President of the European Film Academy since 1996.
