Τhe British cinematic idiom is its unquestionable ability to infuse social interest into a multitude of genres. Neil Jordan, in his chronologically second historical moment of the '80s, sets up a London underworld using the story of a small-time thug who becomes chauffeur and bodyguard for a high-class call-girl only to quickly become embroiled in a tale of criminal tussle and unrequited love. Jordan soars stylishly documenting a glossy|sleazy night world, Bob Hoskins excels in the role that earned him his sole Oscar nomination, Michael Caine is unforgettably villainous, and the result stamped its generation, announced English cinema overseas and stands tall to this day as a model of "neo-noir" social reflection.
