An unconventional love story between an upstart young Pakistani and a vagrant Londoner, and a poignant political commentary on Thatcher’s England, this landmark film introduced us to the then undiscovered talent of Daniel Day Lewis, the insightful pen of Hanif Kureishi and one of the most important English filmmakers. Neither overtly political nor militantly queer, the film recreated an authentic picture of English society in the 1980s. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, Frears’ work reignited global interest for British social realist cinema, and in its quiet way pushed the envelope of a queer culture that until then was sending its love notes from the fringes.
