Working-class England, summer of ’83. Thatcher is still Prime Minister, the Falklands War is raging on, unemployment is sky rocketing and 12-year-old Shaun, recently orphaned in the war and expelled from school, is wandering aimless and alone in Yorkshire; easy prey for the local bunch of happy-go-lucky skinheads. In his most personal film to date, Shane Meadows steers clear of assigning blame, but attempts to examine his young hero within the political and social conflicts of the time. This Is England was presented in the Toronto Film Festival.
