Better Things
Rural England, the present. The small community of Cotswolds is shattered when a young girl dies of a drug overdose. Her tragic death becomes the starting point from which all Cotsworld inhabitants’ personal tragedies begin to unfold. It seems that in the post-Trainspotting era, British cinema has over-exerted itself in its effort to produce the hippest, meanest, bleakest movie on drugs. Duane Hopkins takes a deep breath and, moving away from the overdone clichés, delivers a powerful, low-key drama on isolation set against the backdrop of the idyllic English countryside. Better Things was featured in the Critics’ Week section at Cannes.
