Rumba
Provincial primary school teachers by day and rumba enthusiasts by night, Fiona and Dom spend their evenings amassing prizes at local dance contests. But all that comes to an abrupt end when, trying to dodge a suicidal passer-by with their car, they get involved in a near fatal crash. The accident leaves Fiona minus one leg and Dom with a severe short term memory loss. All of which sounds like prime tear-jerker material, but Rumba ingeniously manages to turn tragedy on its head transforming it into slapstick, treating the viewer with gag after gag about the hapless couple trying to readjust to normal life and ?for the most part- failing miserably. A moving and lighthearted gem reminiscent of Tati and Kaurismaki, Rumba was featured in Critics’ Week at Cannes.
