Gandu is 20 years old and lives in Calcutta. In the local dialect his name means “loser” and “wanker”. His mother is having an affair with a local businessman who provides them with a flat in return. Gandu steals daily from him in order to gamble and spend time at Internet cafés. He’s not in the mood for socialization and he usually remains closed-off, writing lyrics and rapping to his favourite music. This until the moment he meets a driver, a Bruce Lee fan, and the two of them enter a trip-like phase, where the boundaries between reality and fantasy are hard to discern. An anti-Bollywood adventure from India, a bomb on the foundations of the cinematic tradition of the country, “Gandu” presents truly poor people living in a desperate world, without embellishments. Director Q, in his second feature, sketches the portrait of a troubled youth, scoffing at the self-referential nature of adulthood while at the same time exploring the hatred, anger and sadness of an entire generation.
