Natural Selection
A young man named Raymond escapes from prison hidden in a bag full of cut grass. A middleaged religious Christian, Linda, is frustrated with the fact that her husband does not want them to have sexual relations and is shocked when he suffers a stroke. She soon learns that her husband had for years satisfied his urges by giving sperm to a clinic nearby and she takes to the streets, looking for his potential offspring. She will soon meet Raymond and what follows will change her life forever. The film that swept the awards at SXSW, winning seven in total, among which that for Best Film, is a peculiar road trip, that sparkles like an authentic indie cinematic gem. Robbie Pickering, in his mature and concise directorial debut, rests on the chemistry between the performances of Rachael Harris and Matt O’Leary to construct a tragicomic Coenesque universe of sharp characters and bittersweet scenes, which stays with you long after the end credits.
