The Conspirator
Mary Surratt is the lone woman prosecuted as a conspirator in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Frederick is a Union soldier during the American Civil War coming home a hero and hoping to emerge as a successful lawyer. His first case is Mary’s defense and, while he’s hesitant about her innocence at first, he subsequently risks his career to exonerate her in the face of the pre-determined conviction. “The Conspirator” is the first production of the newly-founded American Film Company, a company whose goal is to make historically accurate and impartial films about the past of the United States. Four years after “Lions for Lambs”, the Oscar-winning Robert Redford returns with a historical/trial drama of epic proportions, with the transfixing performances and atmosphere and the newlyborn America in the background.
