Made in Israel
Based on a crazy screenwriting premise, Ari Folman enters absurdist territory as he tracks this unlikely group with a cynical sense of humor and a handful of pulp fiction references a la Tarantino, although his own approach often verges on the bitterly dramatic.
Syria delivers the last Nazi in the world to the Israeli authorities to be put on trial, but Danni Hoffman, the millionaire son of a Holocaust survivor, has his own reasons to demand Schultz’s punishment, worried justice will not be done. So he puts a contract out on his head, instigating a frantic manhunt led by Israeli military officers, Russian killers and other bizarre characters.
Based on a crazy screenwriting premise, Ari Folman enters absurdist territory as he tracks this unlikely group with a cynical sense of humor and a handful of pulp fiction references a la Tarantino, although his own approach often verges on the bitterly dramatic. Delivering killer one-liners, Folman’s characters often look like they just stepped out of a Jim Jarmusch movie or “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” for that matter, proving the Israeli director is perfectly capable of balancing extremities in style.
