52 Tuesdays

When her mother decides to undergo a sex change, 16-year-old Billie has to deal with the shocking news, along with the fact that she will have to move back with her father for the entire year it takes to complete the process. She accepts reluctantly, as long as she gets to see her mother every Tuesday.

When her mother decides to undergo a sex change, 16-year-old Billie has to deal with the shocking news, along with the fact that she will have to move back with her father for the entire year it takes to complete the process. She accepts reluctantly, as long as she gets to see her mother every Tuesday.

As the transition puts a strain on their once powerful bond, Billie starts exploring the limits of her own sexuality, along with two older schoolmates and a video camera she uses to record her daily thoughts.

Sophie Hyde's first narrative feature is clearly influenced by her non-fiction origins: the main character's stunted and turbulent passage into maturity is filtered through the subjective lens of her video camera and issues about identity, sexuality, her place within the family structure and the blurry boundaries between desire and social conventions take on a disarming, humorous but thoroughly mature perspective.
