M*A*S*H

Robert Altman conjures up a naughty anti-military proposition through the eyes of a medical team and their rather hilarious methods of dealing with the everyday horrors around them, while stationed at a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital in the Korean War.

Robert Altman conjures up a naughty anti-military proposition through the eyes of a medical team and their rather hilarious methods of dealing with the everyday horrors around them, while stationed at a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital in the Korean War.

Altman had the audacity of serving up this blatantly antiwar manifesto while the Vietnam War was still raging, after he was forced to defend its authentically anarchic spirit in front of the entire 20th Century Fox Studio executives, who were none too pleased about its release.

With a caustic sense of humor that's bordering on the macabre and its fly-on-the-wall approach, "M*A*S*H" managed to capture the anti-authoritarian spirit of an entire era with its modernist style and liberal attitude, changing the landscape of American comedy forever. The film won the Palm d'Or at the 1970 Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium. L.K.
