Ash Wednesday, 1967. A teenager living in a strictly religious all-girls boarding school predicts after a nightmare that this is her last night and it will be hard for her best friend to follow her to the Wonderland. If only all festival coming-of-age films were more like Saint-Blanquat’s debut. Apperaing like a Hammer film tampered by Argento, immersed in the sublime turquoise hue of the time and accompanied with a fine soundtrack of intelligently “prophetic” tracks, this is ‘Twilight’ for arthouse viewers. At the same time it is the quintessence of teenage angst, exploding femininity, anarchical revolution of personal liberation all vibrating through a befitting leading performance and a wise direction. I.D.
