COPENHAGEN DOES NOT EXIST | KØBENHAVN FINDES IKKE
DENMARK | 2023 | COLOR | DCP | 98’ | DANISH, SERBIAN, SWEDISH
A young woman goes missing under mysterious cir- cumstances. Her father and brother make a strange deal with her partner. They lock him up in an empty apartment and an unusual interrogation begins, delving into the relationship. What happened? Amidst a thematic allusion to Antonioni’s ‘Adventure’ and Farhadi’s ‘About Elly’, as well as an aesthetic nod to the already influential ‘Aftersun’, the film soon reveals its Scandinavian face: a stunningly elliptical story of an (unwholesome?) romantic love in a schizophrenic narrative swirl, where the insides are torn and the surface remains coldly impervious. Eskil Vogt reminds us of his screenwriting form and the direction im- merses us in a labyrinth where the only way out is, perhaps, the final shot. I.D.
