RICEBOY SLEEPS
CANADA | 2022 | COLOR | DCP | 117’ | ENGLISH, KOREAN
Some films encompass the world. They seem to know life, pose the right questions, remain silent, emit awe. They are inevitably rare. All of this is found here, in the story of a woman and her son who immigrate from South Korea to Canada when the father dies. Shim, with confidence based on the excellent screenplay, the strategically considered direction, and the editing which reflects wonderfully the heroes’ world as well as the geography of the film, is sometimes fast-flowing and sometimes pauses on the exaltation of a meditation. The leading performance dominates in the gentle manner only far-Easterners know, as well as the handling of the sensitive issue. A film that will stay with you. I.D.
