UNIVERSAL THEORY | DIE THEORIE VON ALLEM
GERMANY, AUSTRIA, SWITZERLAND | 2023 | B&W | DCP | 118’ | GERMAN, FRENCH
1962. In a Physics symposium in the Alps, a young student tries to complete his dissertation on a challenging theory about multiple realities. Soon, weird phenomena seem to confirm it, as ominous figures, strange clouds, inexplicable deaths, doppelgangers and a mysterious female pianist, which he falls in love with, appear. Perhaps the surprise of this year’s Venice FF Competition; the film is proudly inspired by Aronofsky’s ‘Pi’, Trier’s ‘Europa’, as well as Hitchcock and the Hollywood noir of the ‘40s and ‘50s. Thus it unfolds an ambitious cinematic structure, balancing audaciously between a cosmic thriller and a transformative love story proving that occasionally style is of the essence. Th.P.
