Rose Byrne is a psychotherapist but also a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown. She has a little girl suffering from a mysterious illness, a husband who is constantly away on business, patients worse off than herself, and an apartment that floods when the ceiling collapses, leaving behind a dark hole from which water constantly flows. Along with the medical equipment needed daily for her daughter, she moves into a motel and comes face to face with herself and her limits as her obligations, anxieties, and troubled inner life seem to drive her one step away from madness. An intense and unforgettable experience, like an explosive panic attack captured on film, Mary Bronstein's remarkable work comes to us as a neurotic black comedy, then constantly rolls towards the bizarre and gradually transforms into a hallucinatory psychological thriller on motherhood, parental fears, and the fragile psyche of a woman on the verge. In the lead role, Rose Byrne delivers an Oscar-worthy performance, with physical intensity and emotional class comparable to Gena Rowlands’ in "A Woman Under the Influence" L.K.
