“The invisible art of editing”: MASTERCLASS by YORGOS MAVROPSARIDIS
The 31st Athens International Film Festival and the Creative Europe Media Desk of Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Center are co-organizing, as part of the popular and beloved GREEK SHORT STORIES Competition Section, a masterclass devoted to editing conducted by the internationally acclaimed Greek editor, Yorgos Mavropsaridis (ACE, BFEM, GFE).

Twice nominated for an Academy Award for Best Editing, Yorgos Mavropsaridis is an important figure of contemporary cinema. Through the art of editing he narrates stories profoundly and intensely. He is attached to works of aesthetic significance, of rhythmical and narrative power, such as the multi-awarded Poor Things, The Favourite, The Lobster, Dogtooth, as well as this year’s Bugonia, in all of which he collaborated closely with director Yorgos Lanthimos, contributing to unique results.
Editing is not just a technical stage but the “invisible art” of assembling image and sound, the building blocks of cinematic narration. Under Yorgos Mavropsaridis’ experienced supervision, the participants of the masterclass, film students and professionals, shall have the unique opportunity to be guided and inspired, gaining valuable knowledge and skills in order to identify and compose essential dramatic moments and use their material beneficially while cultivating their own personal artistic voice.
YORGOS MAVROPSARIDIS | ACE, BFE, GFE
His work has been honored multiple times, among which with two Academy Award nominations for “The Favourite” and “Poor Things”, two BAFTA’s, American Cinema Editors Eddie for “The Favourite” and the Best Editor Award of the European Film Academy.
He is considered among the most innovative film editors of his generation, recognized for his particular style, rhythmic precision and ability to create intensity, along with a special sense of humor expressed through editing. He is a key figure of European cinema and he is well-known for his long-standing collaboration with Yorgos Lanthimos, having edited all his feature films since 2001. His multi-awarded work includes films like “Dogtooth” (2009), “The Lobster” (2015), “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” (2017), “The Favourite” (2018), “Poor Things” (2023), “Monos” (2019), “Chevalier” (2015), “Park” (2016), and “She Will” (2021)
Through his bold narrative editing, Mavropsaridis not only shaped some of the most eclectic films of the last two decades, but still inspires a new generation of editors and filmmakers around the world.

The Masterclass will take place on Saturday, October 4th, at the Auditorium Theo Angelopoulos of the French Institute of Greece from 12:00 to 16:00. The entrance is free and the masterclass will be in Greek.
