DEAD RINGERS
CANADA, USA | 1988 | COLOR | DCP | 115’ | ENGLISH
Unforgettable cinema, at once magnetic and repulsive, Cronenberg’s masterpiece creates a rare atmosphere of awe and culminating gloom, inspired from a true story in order to tell that of a pair of identical twin brothers, and doctors of unorthodox methods (Irons plays impeccably both of them), whose complex but until then undisturbed relationship gradually disintegrates because they both fall in love with an actress. Icy cold, seductively macabre and deeply cutting, like the surgical instruments of his protagonists, ‘Dead Ringers’ describes a complicated brotherly love as a disquieting study on the paradoxical road to an unexplored human Twilght Zone. DAVID CRONENBERG
The greatest Canadian filmmaker was born in 1943. He studied English Literature, is an avid reader and showed a talent as a writer since he was a kid. Influenced by horror, sci-fi and the underground avant-garde, he is regarded as the pioneer of ‘body horror’, a term however he disagrees with. He has been honored at Cannes and Berlin, suspiciously never at the Oscars.
