We Were Here
At the start of the 80s, an unknown plague all but eliminates the gay community and, while it’s called “cancer of the gays” at first, it soon acquires the term AIDS. “We Were Here” weaves in its moving web exclusive archival footage of the time, along with interviews from five people who lived through the years of calamity and survived. Today they’re telling their stories, as well as those of the ones not fortunate enough to be around to tell them themselves. More than just a documentary, “We Were Here” is a tribute to the sense of collectivity, which managed to boost the fight for prevention and the battle against the fatal disease. Harrowing and stirring, this filmic essay reflects with a war-like intensity on loss, uncertainty as well as the power that people derive from one another, when they face the worst nightmare.
