Bullhead
Jacky is a lonely young man around 30, working at his uncle’s cow farm. One day, an unscrupulous vet approaches him so that they strike a suspicious deal about the use of illegal drugs on animals. The assassination of a policeman, and the unexpected meeting between Jackie and a man from his mysterious past, will trigger a sequence of developments, with consequences no one can predict. The explosive debut by Belgian director Michael Roskam is an impressive story, dedicated to revenge, the fight for salvation and the inevitability of fate, as it’s presented through the sensational performance by the up-and-coming Matthias Schoenaerts. A violent drama, with its complicated narrative and a few chosen shots of black humour in the same vein as “In Bruges”, “Bullhead” brings the smell of testosterone – and the burnt land in its wake - to the nostrils.
