On the Ice
Two teenagers, raised together like siblings, live in an isolated city in Alaska. One morning, as they’re seal-hunting with another youngster, a row between them ends in a tragic accident. United by their dark secret and filled with guilt, the two best friends keep fabricating fake alibis to ward off the suspicions surrounding them. Skillfully building an unapproachable wall of suspense, Andrew Okpeaha MacLean in his debut presents a thorough exploration of the boundaries of friendship and honour in the lives of two young boys. “On the Ice” is a tight story with the claustrophobic, frozen tundra in the background, deriving its narrative power from a brilliantly developed screenplay and invading the daily lives of two youngsters, who are called to grow up in an almost non-place.
