Submarine
In the 90s, in Swansea in Wales, a 15-year-old middle-class boy is roaming the turmoil of his teenage years. His name is Oliver and he’s doing everything he can to impress the girl in the red coat, named Jordana. The two of them together take the first steps on the way to adult life, but things turn less rosy when serious family problems rear their ugly heads. Based on the Joe Dunthorne novel, “Submarine” is a series of teenage humiliations and betrayals that bewitches with its admirable balance between comical and dramatic moments. Richard Ayoade, one of the best new comic actors of Britain (“The I.T. crowd”), in his directorial debut delivers the most addictive, sweet and dark coming-of-age story that’s come out of Britain this year.
