The Cherry Orchard, Mickey Mouse and Nikos Karathanos
27/9/2016, 18:00, Odeon Opera 1
What is it like to film, from its very first rehearsal, the unorthodox and deeply touching staging of "The Cherry Orchard" by Nikos Karathanos and watch as today’s Greece is unfolded before your eyes, without any hint of didacticism? Elias Giannakakis and Apostolia Papaioannou are the most fitting pair to capture the unprecedented experience of artistic creation on camera.
For the past decade Nick Karathanos has occupied a special place in Greek theatre. Talking to members of his company during the first day of rehearsals for Chekhov’s the Cherry Orchard, he emphasized that they will have to go back to "...some violent scenes from their childhood memories to achieve beauty..."
How can it be possible to film the unorthodox but deeply moving adaptation of "The Cherry Orchard" by Nick Karathanos from the first day of rehearsals to the opening night, and see the reality of modern Greece unfold in front of one’s eyes without a trace of didacticism? Elias Yannakakis and Apostolia Papaioannou were there with their cameras from the beginning of preparations for a truly great and incredibly touching performance. Having developed an intimacy with Nick Karathanos and his team (two years earlier they had filmed the staging of "Golfo" by the same team at the ancient theater of Epidavros), they deliver an unparalleled, artistically creative experience.
