THE LAST WALTZ
USA | 1978 | COLOR | DCP | 117’ | ENGLISH
Some cameras are blessed to document moments that a moviola will turn into aesthetic poles of art. And others may boast of documenting History. In ‘The Last Waltz’, perhaps the greatest music documentary ever made, we see the beginning of the end of an era, an era that began for the greater audience almost twenty years ago with Elvis and turned red-hot through a decade of revolutions, hope, achievements and assassinations, namely the ‘60s. The Band sums up the reasons for its end too, the exaggeration, the substance abuse and some kind of romanticism in the years that would gradually banish it. A monumental gathering of talent, major songwriting, a last waltz between the rock past and its greatest contemplations. I.D.
