For many the film that deserved the Golden Bear at this year's Berlin Film Festival, Matthias Glasner's ("The Free Will") three-hour family epic is a contender for perhaps the most anti-commercial title of all time. Still, you won’t find yourself looking at your watch throughout this masterful tragicomedy. Divided into chapters, with a perfect script that recalls an untamed version of a Bergman psychodrama and a terrific performance by Lars Eidinger, a top-notch actor in current German cinema, the film is a rollercoaster of moods relentlessly bombarded by the emotional convulsions of a handful of characters confronted with the idea of the inevitable end. MATTHIAS GLASNER
German film director, born in Hamburg in 1965. He founded the production company Schwarzweiss Filmproduktion with Jürgen Vogel and has worked for many years in television and film.
