Self-exiled in Europe, Rasoulof abandoned Iran with a story that emerged from within contemporary social unrest. That is why the drama of a family ideologically divided soon turns into a thriller of agony. Through the documented reality that intrudes on the action, a genre film becomes lucidly apparent, with Rasoulof building multiple layers, masterfully employing every cinematic trick. "The Seed of the Sacred Fig" is definitely not the subtle average allegory. It is a full on assault on a suffocating regime that kills its children. It is one of the most important moments of political cinema in the 21st century. Jury Special Prize at the Cannes and Germany's official submission to the foreign-language Oscar race.
