On a rainy night in 1943, in a bar hidden behind the bright Broadway marquees, famous Great American Songbook lyricist Lorenz Hart prepares for a last public "performance" before his inglorious and premature retirement. He is at the twilight of his career and life, but for that one night he will stand at the edge of the bar with his whiskey and his sarcasm. He will meet friends and old colleagues. He will philosophize bitterly and gossip saucily. He will find himself completely enthralled by the angelic, ambitious ingénue who has stolen his heart. And once the night is over, his time will also be over. With Ethan Hawke in the lead role, in what is possibly the best performance of his career, Richard Linklater makes a splendid return to the dialogue-driven cinema that made him famous (“Before Sunrise” and its two excellent sequels), he conveys a lively, witty script and narrates the melancholic resignation of a show business servant for whom the spotlight was destined to fade early. RICHARD LINKLATER
American filmmaker, born in 1960. He started studying at the university, but then moved to work at an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. After reading incessantly and visiting repertory cinemas at Houston, he decided to become a filmmaker. 5 Oscar nominations, various festival and critical honors, as well as the audience’s approval for his work, are living proof he made the right career move.
