Ten years after winning the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film for “Son of Saul”, László Nemes once again exercises his dazzling directorial mastery to transport audiences to the turbulent post-war Hungary of the 1950s. There, a stubborn boy (played with tremendous energy by newcomer Bojtorján Barabas) desperately searches for traces of his lost father, against the wishes of his mother, who insists that they entrust their fate to a mysterious and boorish man. Drawing from the true story of his own father, Nemes parallels the individual rebellion of his young hero with the efforts of an entire country to find its identity and independence. L.K.
