In an unspecified future obstructing dreaming becomes the secret of longevity. Still, a handful of rebels tenaciously deny to abandon dreaming choosing thus a short but exciting life in exchange of their dreams that, however, disrupts History. Starting from a symbolic science fiction idea, the visionary Chinese director of the amazing “Long Day's Journey Into Night” invites us to leave our expectations outside the theater and indulge in a feverish dream-retrospective of cinema history, through five episodes that ingeniously jump from era to era and from one genre to another. From expressionist horror to the monochrome world of spy noir, and from a snowy Buddhist parable to the ecstatically beautiful vampire romance, “Resurrection” aspires to encompass an entire century of cinema and does so with unparalleled skill, reminding us that art can still test its limits. This magnificent tribute to the power of images and storytelling as the stuff of human dreams, culminates towards a dizzying 40-minute single shot that takes your breath away, and rightly won the Special Jury Prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
