A Syrian author, tormented by a cryptic parable in his dreams, sees his loneliness manifest itself in a writer's block. Disappointed, he decides to retreat to a remote island near the North Sea, where the only inhabitants are an enigmatic woman (the legendary Hanna Schygulla in yet another great performance) and her coarse son. Despite his initial distrust, this mysterious encounter will prove decisive for his life. Already recognized in arthouse circles, the young Syrian director presents the second part of his trilogy about his homeland. With his established and utterly magnetic style in full bloom, he insists on the power of grand images and the intensity of silence, crafting an atmospheric “tarkovskian” canvas where wild nature perfectly complements the field of internal conflicts.
