The acclaimed director of "Central Station" and "The Motorcycle Diaries" makes his big comeback with this disarmingly human and moving drama. Based on a notorious true story, the film recounts the efforts of a courageous and stoic mother of five to keep her family together when her former MP husband is arrested by the country's dictatorial regime and then disappears. The film begins in 1971 and covers 25 years of the struggle of this admirable woman who turns her ordeal into a stirring lesson in love, tenacious optimism and unrelenting preservation of memory. Screenwriting Award at the recent Venice Film Festival and one of the year’s finest performances by Fernanda Torres.

WALTER SALLES
Brazilian director, born in 1956 in Rio de Janeiro, a key voice in contemporary Brazilian cinema. He studied in Rio and Southern California. Success and recognition came in the 1990s, when he achieved a foreign-language Oscar nomination ("Central Station") and won the Golden Bear in Berlin with the same film.
