NIGHT RECEDES | LE SOIR RECULE
08/10/24, 19:30, ASTOR
GREECE, FRANCE | 2024 | COLOR & B&W | DCP | 70’ | GREEK, FRENCH, ENGLISH
"Night Recedes" refers to the fascinating career of two important artists: the famous Greek sculptor Memos Makris (1913-1993), creator, among others, of the famous head in the entrance of the Polytechnic School, and the versatile Zizi Makris (1924-2014), who, apart from mosaics and tapestries, successfully worked also in drawing and photography. Wandering between German-occupied Athens, multicultural post-war Paris and Cold War Budapest, their lives reflect the art and history of the 20th century, the hopes and disappointments on both sides of the "Iron Curtain". Through their work and memories, the film revisits issues always resonating strongly within us: utopia and ideology, totalitarianism(s), exile and freedom.
