THE SHROUDS

FRANCE, CANADA | 2024 | COLOR | DCP |119’ | ENGLISH
"How dark are you willing to go?" asks the protagonist, Vincent Cassel, as if addressing the audience. Then, David Cronenberg answers with a genuinely macabre, highly personal film, about a widowed businessman who builds an innovative cemetery in honour of his dead wife. When it is mysteriously vandalized one night, he finds himself in the middle of a dense conspiracy that intertwines environmental activism with privacy violations and international espionage. The great Canadian filmmaker may be exploring again the relationship between the human body, technology and the rapidly changing world around him, but this time he reflects from the perspective of an artist with a clearer than ever awareness of his own mortality.
