This is undoubtedly the brain child of someone inspired by Spike Lee. Kadir just lost a brother and Luis tries to forget he has lost a son. They will meet during a cold New York night at the subway, when the first will attempt to burgle the other at gunpoint. Newcomer Aristotle Torres places a wounded child against a wounded adult and sees who will run first. It’s the beginning of a loving, brisk and stylishly directed relationship, discreetly evading melodrama. Guzmán fills the screen with generosity, in a city where the train’s metallic scream keeps reminding that violence sometimes constitutes some kind of an answer. D.P.

ARISTOTLE TORRES
American writer/director. The short film version of ‘Story Ave’ was his debut during his time in the Sundance Lab. He directed a series of music videos and is an accomplished director of commercial brand campaigns. This is his feature film debut.
