In 1970s Madagascar, a 10-year-old comics-loving boy takes in the tropical paradise around him. His vivid imagination feeds on the surroundings. Soon, however, he will have to face the world of the adults and experience the first cracks in the ideal image they have of him. Drawing from personal recollections and military diaries, the director of ‘120 Beats Per Minute’ directs an ostensibly discreet but richly detailed coming of age story, placed at the end of colonialism. History and nostalgia clash with rationality and morality, while the director discloses artfully the essence out of what remains unspoken, identifying us with his petite protagonist. Th.K.
