THE ROYAL HOTEL
AUSTRALIA | 2023 | COLOR | DCP | 91’ | ENGLISH
Cash-strapped, two young American women visiting Australia, end up working at the ‘Royal Hotel’, a pub in the middle of nowhere whose customers are the mine workers of the area. Soon they will realize that they constitute the pub’s sole attraction. Isolated in a place where no one is to be trusted, they have to withstand for at least a week the male dragnet closing threateningly in. Eclectic relative of Ted Kotcheff’s masterful ‘Wake in Fright’, the film balances horror and psychological elements, eliciting instinctive responses. Kitty Green’s does a splendid job orchestrating genre mechanisms, carefully then detonating a feminist bomb in the face of contemporary cinema. Th.K.
