Three years after the emotional rollercoaster of “All of us Strangers”, Andrew Haigh returns with a melancholic cinematic ballad, demonstrating just what an empathetic a director he is and how perfectly he attunes himself to the needs of the story he sets out to tell. Based on the short story of the same name by the acclaimed Irish author Colm Tóibín, his “Long Winter” is set in the remote Rocky Mountains of Colorado during the 1950s, and follows the gradual breakdown of a family when the mother mysteriously disappears and the eldest son sets out on a desperate search for her. His journey will bring him face to face not only with the difficult task of coping with loss but also with the need to escape from the shadow of a dogmatic father, to embrace his repressed sexuality and to finally dream of a future that stretches beyond the vast landscape of his childhood. Set against an evocative winter landscape that echoes the characters’ profound loneliness, with the frozen snow symbolizing an underlying network of buried instincts and emotions, Fred Hechinger (‘The White Lotus’) emerges as a worthy leading man, sensitively embodying yet another of Haigh’s signature characters, one who will first and foremost have to battle with himself in order to secure his self-awareness and independence. ANDREW HAIGH
British filmmaker, born in 1973. He began his career as an assistant film editor, among others in Ridley Scott films, before turning to writing and directing. “Weekend” and “45 Years” established him in the festival circuit – and a lot further.
