From the fairytale town of Bruges in Belgium, a small town in modern-day Missouri and a remote island in Ireland in the last century, Martin McDonagh’s cinema takes us to the tropical Easter Island of 1973. Two CIA agents arrive there on an unknown mission. The older of the two is called Chris (John Malkovich); he is a veteran of the secret services and knows stories better left unknown. The younger agent is Lee (Sam Rockwell), who treats him with the understanding a son would show his elderly father and constantly cares to smooth over most of his eccentricities. However, during this seemingly cloudless journey, Chris finds himself facing a profound character crisis regarding his life and his troubled past. His CIA superiors (led by the cunning Steve Buscemi) will start to break out in a cold sweat over his sudden change of heart and his escort will have to reassure everyone that every dangerous secret will remain, well, a secret.  But nothing is entirely innocent; nobody is what they seem. And the director of “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” frames everything with a delightfully wicked blend of spy drama and cynical comedy, with clear political barbs that resonate right up to the present day, and featuring a superb John Malkovich in one of the roles of his career (for which he won the Best Actor Award at the recent Venice Film Festival and is now heading for the Oscars). Loukas Katsikas

MARTIN MCDONAGH
British playwright, screenwriter, director and producer, born in 1970. A remarkable career at the theatre is followed by five nominations for a Tony Αward, while an Oscar win for a short film in 2004 and six further (expect 2-3 more in 2027 ceremony) Oscar nominations make him one of the most particular, delightful and important voices of contemporary cinema.
