How does one explain in a simple and direct way what "crowd pleaser" means? Probably by using the example of "Club Kid." Jordan Firstman's dazzling directorial debut received an ecstatic reception at its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, was hailed as one of the most beloved films in recent years according to Letterboxd users, and it is gearing up for the Oscars. However, what matters most is what it truly accomplishes: through a spicy blend of humour, tenderness, and emotion, it builds a magical bridge that manages to unite the unapologetically queer with the euphorically mainstream. The young hero of the film is a gay party organizer (played by Firstman himself) who lives out the wildest nights of New York City until a ten-year-old boy (portrayed by the disarming Reggie Absolom) suddenly appears at his door, proving to be the son he didn't know he had and never imagined how much he needed. It is one of those rare occasions when it seems difficult to resist a film you know from the outset that it aims to steal your heart; "Club Kid" is an addictive celebration of alternative families, uplifting communities, and the unexpected ray of sunshine that can brighten a dark room when the party is over. JORDAN FIRSTMAN

American actor, writer, comedian, and filmmaker born in Long Island, New York in 1991. He developed an early passion for theater, comedy, and film. He attended a brief undergraduate musical theater program in Cincinnati before pivoting toward writing and filmmaking. This is his feature debut.
