In 1989, whilst fighting an uneven battle with AIDS, the British actor Ian Charleson took to the stage of the National Theatre in London to play Hamlet, the role of a lifetime. The star of the Oscar-winning film “Chariots of Fire”, rather than turning towards the glamour of Hollywood, chose to return to his theatrical roots. There, however, his dream clashes with the harsh reality of his fragile health. Andrew Scott, in one of the most memorable performances of his career – and indeed of this year – brings Charleson to life with piercing honesty, humour and subtlety, transforming his confrontation with death into an experience that touches both body and soul. At his side, Olivia Colman plays a doctor who supports, with protective tenderness, the actor and other gay men amidst the epidemic. “Elsinore” is a bold cinematic drama that celebrates the healing power of art and the invisible forces that keep us standing during life’s toughest trials.
