After his parents’ interference, young Gabriel is admitted to a seminary. Contrary to what someone would expect from such an institute, he finds himself in a Machiavellian universe where, in order to survive, he will be forced to adopt equally devious methods. Stylish, restrained, rich in detail and with the confidence of a veteran, Sandu’s semi-autobiographical debut feature sums up in 150 minutes all his experience from the seminary.
Sandu has the (much appreciated) nerve to introduce himself as a mature director, with a small epic about corruption in Romania’s most respectable institution. No wonder it has attracted Cristian Mungiu’s interest, who will be the producer of his next film. Th.K.
