“Family Romance, LLC” hires out friends, followers even relatives as in the case of 13-year old Ishii whose missing father is replaced by the owner of the company. It sounds like a science fiction plot but is in fact a modern-day reality which inspired one of the most bizarre fiction films Werner Herzog has offered up in recent years.

A great thinker and artist of (not only) our times Herzog is still tirelessly here with us. This time he creates a film stranger than fiction. In today’s Japan, a young girl waits in the park and meets a man who reveals to her that he’s her father. He has abandoned her after an early divorce. The truth, as we are about to find out, is somewhat different. The man is actually an actor, under the supervision of a company called ‘Family Romance LLC’ which staffs with actors life roles that the really responsible people cannot play.
Herzog creates a masterpiece, he breaks all boundaries between reality and fiction, encourages improvisations, makes awkward look skilful and reaches a humanization (the actors connect really with the people they communicate), which complicates furthermore this exciting work. Ι.D.

Born in Munich in 1942, this German director is a film legend who has received several awards. He has directed several documentaries, fiction and short films, some of which are of the most influential films of the second half of the 20th century.
